2019 Brewlanu Article
We are so excited to announce a new, innovative initiative for our Coolanu participants (teens with special needs ages 14-20). As the growth of job skills is one of the most vital components of the Coolanu program, we created Brewlanu. the JCC Camps at Medford’s first ever coffee shop and canteen! The shop will be open for staff at the JCC Camps at Medford to purchase coffee, iced tea, lemonade, cold bottled drinks, and snacks.
Brewlanu offers more than a place for snacks and coffee. This coffee canteen gives campers authentic practice that prepares them for independence and teaches them employment-related skills including counting money, interacting with customers, and organizing products. Brewlanu boosts camper’s employment and life skills through real experience. Campers also practice advertising and public speaking skills by creating announcements to raise excitement around camp. Because of the constant repetition, campers are able to transfer these skills from the camp setting to the real world. Brewlanu is the ideal setting to allow campers to grow, thrive and learn all summer long.
Brewlanu held its opening this week and is already a roaring success. Staff love the opportunity to get a refreshing drink, and our teens are so proud of their jobs, their new aprons, and the ability to interact with so many camp staff.
A huge thanks to the Jewish Federation of South NJ’s Women’s Giving Circle for their generous donation to help make Brewlanu possible!
