Camp Hilltop Week 3 2019
Hilltop Happenings
Hanukkah was Hot in Hilltop this week!!!!
The eight-day festival of Chanukah is also known as the Festival of Lights and usually
takes place in December. Even though we weren’t lighting real candles at camp, Hilltop brought the heat to the holiday. In Little Scientists, Morgan and Mia conducted experiments on fire. They looked at what causes fire, how fire works, and what to do in case of a fire. In Campers Take the Stage, we talked about everything dreidel. Eileen and Antony taught the campers the dreidel song and then taught the campers how to play the human dreidel game.
Much of the activity of Chanukah takes place at home. Central to the holiday is the lighting of the menorah, an eight-branched candelabrum to which one candle is added on each night of the holiday until it is ablaze with light on the eighth night. In Usable Arts, Stephanie and Sierra helped the campers create their own menorah banners. The campers used markers and water to create interesting designs to dazzle the Chanukah banners. If that wasn’t sweet enough, Laurie and Hailey made sugar cookie dreidels and stars of David with the kids. The dough is delicious! Look for this recipe and all of Laurie’s other yummy recipes later in the summer when we send home our Hilltop Camp Cookbook.
