Camp Shalom explores the ingredients of a Recipe for Respect

By JCC Camps at Medford

Things are really heating up Week 3 in Camp Shalom!  Our campers have been keeping cool and hydrated while exploring this week’s theme, Kavod (Respect).

Campers at Master Chef, Jr. really enjoyed baking “respect donuts,” and while at Mad Science respect was practiced in order to work together to try to build the tallest tower that could support a golf ball.  Campers at Nature learned about respect to the animals at our petting zoo and plant life around camp.  At Music, campers listened to the song “You’ve Got a Friend in Me,” from the movie Toy Story, then used sticks to keep rhythm and listen to one another.  A “Recipe for Respect” was created by campers at Usable Art – respect needs a lot of “ingredients” to really come together.  All campers at Sports activities sharpened their sports skills while practicing good sportsmanship.

Jerusalem/Tel Aviv campers had a great time at their Late Stay this week!  Campers enjoyed extra sports time, dinner, and a special magic show.  It’s always a lot of fun!  Our next Late Stay is for Haifa/Eilat on Wednesday, July 26, and then Masada/Dimona on Wednesday, August 2.  Please remember to log on your Camp In Touch portal to complete your child’s permission forms!

On Friday, we had a camp-wide PJ Library Day.  PJ Library, a national book and Jewish family engagement program, sends high-quality, age-appropriate Jewish books and music to families each month.  Through our camp’s participation in the PJ Goes to Camp program, each Jerusalem/Tel Aviv camper was gifted with a PJ Our Way book, for campers ages 9-11.  This summer’s book selections are Who Is Stan Lee? or Who Is Steven Spielberg?  We look forward to these biographies leading to conversations about Jewish identity and positive Jewish role models.

We are looking forward to a great Week 4, including a camper favorite – Carnival Day on Thursday!

B’Shalom,
